United Workers Party Candidate for Castries South Tommy Descartes is calling on the Saint Lucia Labour Party to account for their use of the Citizens By Investment Program funds. The Flambeau hopeful made these statements at the UWP Rally held on Sunday November 16 at the William Peter Boulevard.
Descartes, who has served in Saint Lucia’s Department of Economic Planning as Chief Economist, chided the government for what he notes is under-reporting of the funds obtained through the program. While he didn’t call him by name, this was an indirect shot at Minister for Investment and Descartes political opponent in the next general election, Dr. Ernest Hilaire.
“If Saint Kitts and Grenada can bring billions of CIP monies into their coffers, it is not far-fetched for us to wonder if billions of CIP monies are unaccounted for in Saint Lucia” he said.
“But we heard Richard Frederick say, he said that they got $240 million.
You know, my brothers and sisters, we cannot go to the polls without the Labour Party tabling the audited report of our CIP. We cannot go to the polls without that information.”
“Now I know Parliament has been dissolved. I don’t know how they’re going to do it, but they have to do it, my brothers and sisters, and we must demand from the Labour Party, we want our annual report tabled in Parliament.”
“But let me tell you something. Let me tell you something, my good people of Saint Lucia. You will never get accountability from the Labour Party. The only way that we can get any sort of accountability about our CIP program is for us to vote the Labour Party out on December 1st.”
