Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre is set to assume the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in July as Saint Lucia prepares to host the 51st regular meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM from July 5 to 8.
Pierre will officially succeed Prime Minister Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis and will serve a six-month term ending December 31, 2026.
The regional summit, which brings together Heads of Government from across the Caribbean Community, will be held under the theme CARICOM: From Resilience to Renewal in a Changing World.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister Pierre described the event as a significant moment for Saint Lucia and outlined his vision for the region during the country’s tenure as CARICOM Chair.
According to the Prime Minister, the conference theme reflects both the challenges facing the region and the opportunities that lie ahead.
“The Caribbean people have always been resilient. Our history tells a story of endurance, of societies that emerged from colonialism, overcame economic vulnerability, and built independent nations guided by hope, determination and unity,” Pierre said.
He noted, however, that resilience alone will not be sufficient to address the increasingly complex challenges confronting the region.
“The task before us now is renewal,” he stated.
Pierre said his chairmanship will focus on renewing key areas of regional development, including economic growth, regional cooperation, institutional effectiveness and opportunities for Caribbean citizens.
“CARICOM must deliver results that our people can see and feel in their everyday lives,” he said, emphasising that regional integration must extend beyond policy discussions and translate into tangible benefits for citizens across the Caribbean.
