Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre used Thursday night’s Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) celebratory public meeting to fire back at the opposition United Workers Party (UWP), telling supporters he would not hesitate to call a general election if pushed too far.
The meeting marked the fifth anniversary of the SLP’s 2021 election win. After thanking supporters for what he called “protecting the victory”, Pierre quickly addressed the opposition.
“If they get me vex and I decide I don’t want any opposition, I will call an election sooner than later,” he said.
Since the December 1, 2025 general election, which saw the Saint Lucia Labour Party win 16 seats to the United Workers Party’s one, the opposition has regularly criticised the government. The UWP’s concerns include the cost of living, crime, fiscal management and the performance of some Cabinet ministers. It has also called for the removal of several ministers.
Pierre accused the opposition of trying to “destroy this country”. He claimed they had written to foreign agencies, banks and grant-funding institutions to undermine his administration.
He suggested the attacks were driven by the fact that the United Workers Party still holds a seat in Parliament. Pierre warned that if they continued, he would ensure the UWP wins no seats in the next election.
“Let me say for the last time, if they get me vex I will call an election sooner than later, and there will be nobody in Parliament.”
Pierre acknowledged that his administration is facing a difficult time, with a number of external pressures affecting the country. Still, he urged Labour Party supporters to remain united and keep defending the party’s victory.
“I never want you to get into a situation where these guys ever rule Saint Lucia again.”
