Saint Lucia’s Young Fighters Shine at Schools Boxing Championship

Saint Lucia’s junior boxers delivered an outstanding performance at the ninth Annual Winfield Braithwaite Schoolboys and Junior Boxing Championship held last weekend in Guyana. The four-member team from Saint Lucia secured a commendable second place among five competing countries, bringing home 2 gold and 2 silver medals.

Guyana showcased a remarkable showing throughout the tournament, clinching the overall title with a total of 20 points at the conclusion of the three-day event held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, which recently underwent refurbishment. This venue, opened in November 1975, served as a fitting backdrop for the exciting bouts.

With 20 points, the host nation walked away as the 2026 Winfield Braithwaite Schoolboys and Junior Boxing Championship overall champions, with Saint Lucia settling for second place.

Guyana dominated the medal tally, winning five gold and three silver medals, with their only losses coming at the hands of Saint Lucia. The Saint Lucian team has been a consistent competitor at the Caribbean Schoolboys and Juniors Boxing tournaments since their inception in 2016, thanks to the efforts of GBA president Steve Ninvalle.

As the championship reached its climax, Guyana capped off a strong performance by securing four gold medals on the final night and earning five of the seven titles available that session, while Saint Lucia proudly finished as the runner-up. The home boxers dominated particularly in the Under-13 division and international categories including 37-40kg, 52-56kg, 57-60kg, and 71-74kg, highlighting Guyana’s depth in junior boxing talent.

However, not every match went in favor of the home fighters. Saint Lucia’s Daniel Martin made a strong impact in the 75kg final, defeating Guyana’s Oasis ‘Pretty Boy’ Prince by points. Martin’s powerful right hand consistently troubled Prince, showcasing his effective offensive strategy.

Daniel Martin carved his path to victory, outpointing Prince by leveraging his superior reach and precise jabs.

In another key bout, Saint Lucia’s Nachan Alex triumphed over Guyana’s highly regarded Ken Harvey in the 60-63.5kg final. Alex’s aggressive style and rapid-fire combinations forced Harvey into a defensive position.

Although Harvey landed a stunning right hand that momentarily stunned Alex, the Saint Lucian boxer held his ground and survived the final round to secure gold.

David Christopher, President of the Saint Lucia Boxing Association (SLBA), praised the young athletes for their efforts, noting that a “larger contingent could have potentially secured the overall title.”
