Motorists in Saint Lucia are now paying more for gasoline and diesel, with the price increases starting on Monday.
The retail price of both gasoline and diesel has moved from $16.00 to $16.75 per gallon, while kerosene has risen from $9.66 to $10.41 per gallon.
“This increase in oil prices was due mainly to factors beyond our control,” Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre said at Monday’s pre-Cabinet press briefing, where he announced the latest fuel price adjustments.
According to the Office of the Prime Minister, crude oil prices rose by approximately 5.5% during the review period, climbing above US$100 per barrel amid ongoing geopolitical tensions that continue to impact global energy markets.
Those increases have pushed up petroleum product prices around the world, with the effects now being felt locally.
Despite the adjustments to fuel prices, the government says it continues to absorb a significant portion of rising energy costs through subsidies aimed at keeping cooking gas prices stable and easing the burden on consumers and businesses.
As a result, LPG prices remain unchanged at $34.00 for a 20-pound cylinder, $38.00 for a 22-pound cylinder, $288.50 for a 100-pound cylinder and $2.76 per pound for bulk LPG.
The Office of the Prime Minister noted that without subsidies, consumers would be paying considerably more. A 20-pound cylinder would cost about $69.46, while a 22-pound cylinder would increase to $76.41. A 100-pound cylinder would rise to $347.32, and bulk LPG would move to $3.35 per pound.
The government says the subsidies form part of its ongoing efforts to cushion households and businesses from the full impact of rising global energy prices.
